SAMPLE ACTIVITY 3 INSTRUCTIONS

SAMPLE ACTIVITY 3

This activity works better after you have introduced the irregular verbs with activity 1.

ACTIVITY 3

90 IRREGULAR VERBS - PAIR WORK

  • TYPE OF GROUPING

Students in pairs

  • OBJECTIVE

Students become familiar with the spelling, meaning and pronunciation of these verbs. Also students review irregular verbs.

  • GRAMMAR AND FUNCTIONS  Meanings of irregular verbs

  • VOCABULARY  Verbs as in Appendix 1 , 2

  • PREPARATION

Make sure that you have all the MATERIALS before going to the classroom.

  • TIME : 10 to 15 minutes

  • MATERIALS

7 sets of small verb cards as in chart # 1 (see Appendix 1)

7 sets of small verb cards as in chart # 2 (see Appendix 2)

  • DETAILS

All the cards are the same color as the verbs in each of the columns of charts 1, 2.

This is to ensure the easy control you can have of which verbs are being revised by choosing them by their color. For example you can revise only the verbs in chart 1 with a group of students and give them only those small cards to play with and the same for chart 2.

INSTRUCTIONS

1-      Tell students they are going to revise the meaning of irregular verbs.

2-     Tell them they should sit in pairs facing each other.

3-     Demonstrate the activity first. Place one pile of cards (one set) on the table facing down.

What you can see now is one verb in English on top.

4-     Student A picks one card and asks student B the meaning (usually a translation).

5-     Student B says it and if he is right, he can keep the card. If not the card remains on another pile on the table.

6-     Students proceed in turns like this till all the cards have been used.

7-     The one with the most cards is the winner as he or she could remember the most meanings.

8-     Next they can repeat the same but this time the cards are placed with the L1 meaning on top.  This adds more difficulty and provides a second round.

9-     Once a pair has finished with one set of cards corresponding to chart 1, they do the same for chart 2. There are enough cards for 14 pairs of students in the class.

Students can also do worksheets 1 through 9 on pages 73-81.
